10.30am     ‘Spice it Up’

Jessie Singh from ‘Dhaba at the Mill’ will talk about spices and how to use them and also share some recipes and demonstrate vegetarian cooking.

In India, Dhabas line the roadsides, serving fresh curries to the common man and woman. They are simple and honest, a tent to cover pots perched above open fire, surrounded by tables and crowds. At Kyneton's DHABA, this simple authenticity is there aim. Housed in a historic post and beam steam mill, DHABA is a place for locals and visitors alike, to share delicious Indian food as well as stories, laughs and Indian cultures.

Jessi grew up in Northern India where his mother's village kitchen was his classroom. Most of the day was spent around and preparing food. Daily, he watched her make fresh yoghurt, butter and lassi from the buffalo milk she gathered herself. She made dough for roti (flat, round bread) that was baked over an open fire and served without fail, for each threemeals, every single day. The door was always open and guests were part of their everyday and they always...always shared food. Jessi has never wanted to do anything else but be the one cooking that food.

11.45am     ‘TBA’

12.15pm     ‘Sip and Taste’

Barfold Estate Winery presents a tasting of 4 of their hand crafted wines. The wine characteristics will be discussed while being matched to a tasting plate of 4 different foods created to compliment the wines.

Craig and Sandra Aitken make hand crafted estate grown wines on their rustic farm, located midway between Heathcote and Kyneton. Fruit from vines managed to low yields, is hand plunged in small fermenters to produce wines of intense colours and flavours. Established in 1998, the vineyard is planted to shiraz and a small quantity of cabernet sauvignon. A further planting of viognier is also planned. Their first release was Barfold Estate 2002 Heathcote Shiraz which won three medals including Gold at the Ballarat Wine Show. Their 2003 and 2004 shiraz wines have been rated at 93 points in James Haliday's Wine Companion and the vineyard/winery has achieved 4 ½ star rating.

SUSTAINABILITY SEMINARS

Interested in producing your own fruit and vegetables or improving your yields? Would you like to find out how to nourish and improve your soil? Are you on the land and want to work more sustainably? Would you like to see a demonstration permaculture garden? Ask questions about permaculture, soil, composting, compost tea, peak oil and the future?

The Kyneton Transition Hub has an exciting display at this year’s 'Kyneton Show' held at the Kyneton Showgrounds on Saturday the 19th November 9am - 5pm. The annual agricultural show attracts farmers and townies alike and is one of Kyneton’s big events of the year.

The Kyneton Transition Hub will be showcasing a walk-through permaculture garden and a working Compost Tea Brewer. Both of these are applicable to backyard gardens and large scale farming.

There will also be expert speakers in the Kyneton Transition Hub's 'Sustainability Marquee' giving talks and answering questions on a variety of topics such as: soil health, biodynamic farming, composting, worm farms, dams and swales, and peak oil. The sustainability seminars, workshops and displays are supported by a generous grant provided by the Macedon Ranges Shire Council.

There’s a special plant giveaway for kids with the Kyneton Treasurehunt Showbag, and we’ll have lots of resources on display or available for you to take home. We’ll also have compost tea for sale—it’s like liquid gold for your garden or farm.

All are welcome to come and visit our display at the Show. Seminars start at 10 am. Look for the big teepee to find us!

LANDCARE

At the 151st Kyneton Agricultural Show on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th November you can help the Upper Campaspe Landcare Network and the North Central CMA celebrate 25 years of Landcare in Victoria. Landcare will have a stand in the community corner at the Show.

While you're in the community corner taking part in some of the activities such as Birds of Prey; the Snake Handler, Pony Rides, Magic & Puppet Shows, Farmer Darryl’s Animal Farm and of course the popular Kids Tent, take the time to investigate Landcare in our district. The Landcare stand will be attended by local landcare people who all have similar interests in local landcare issues.

The Upper Campaspe Landcare Network will be promoting landcare and asking show goers to participate in landcare activities on their own land or even in their own backyard. The Landcare Network has local plants to give away; ranging from indigenous trees to shrubs to grasses. These plants have been grown from seed collected from local indigenous plants because these are most suited to local environmental conditions. Indigenous vegetation offers food for native animals, lowers water tables, provides stock shelter, prevents soil erosion and keeps the air clean.

"These small plants will be the large old trees of the future and will feature in the sustainability of our agricultural, economic and environmental systems" said Michael O'Sullivan, President of the Kyneton Agricultural Society. The Upper Campaspe Landcare Network is also participating in the Kyneton Show's treasure hunt showbag- buy an empty showbag when you enter the Show and fill it up at participating stands.
